Nintendo fights resales

Posted by Jed

Nintendo has never liked the idea of importing or reselling of games(or rentals for that matter in the late 80s and early 90s) and they want Gamers to stay interested in their games. Nintendo is looking to implement new features into some of their games that will add replay value over time. In their upcoming Fall release for Japan, Pokémon E-card for GBA will have this feature. It will allow for additional characters and special skills that can be added to the game by new e-cards that are read by the e-card reader. It’s very unlikely we’ll ever see the game outside of Japan, but this could be something that Nintendo will pursue in the future as they get more into Internet gaming(which could have patches for games)

Spider Man on GameCube

Posted by Jed

The hit comic book title “Spider Man” that millions of people read monthly will have it’s own movie. There will also be a game based on the Movie.

According to a TV show that I watch about Gaming, which is called “Electric Playground”, they were interviewing the people at Activision who are making the Spider Man game. One of the show’s host’s said the following: “So Spider Man will be released on the Next generation consoles, Playstation 2, XBOX… The guy being interviewed at Activision then quickly said “GameCube”.

Does this mean that Spider Man will be released on the GameCube? I certainely hope so, as I’m a fan of the web slinger. Not a big one however.

GBA Delayed!

Posted by Jed

I was in a department store today, and I walked into the Electronics department. There was a GBA which could be played, however, there was no power in the machine, because somebody probably left it turned on for all last night(maybe). There was a sign that also said, GameBoy Advance, available in stores June 13, 2001. This is probably the official launch day for GBA in Canada. However, there were some games on display(4 to be exact) and although I’m not sure, they could be there to be sold, or just on display for people to realize that those games exist…

The cost of the GBA was $139.99

The 4 games that were on display were: Mario Advance, Tony Hawk and 2 others which I seem to forget…

Perfect Dark Movie confirmed

Posted by Jed

Yes, it’s true. The popular first person shooter game with Joanna Dark on the N64 will have a movie based on the game. Fireworks Entertainement and Goodman Rosen prods got the TB and movie right from the Perfect Dark game. The Press release also shows an estimation of the release date for Perfect Dark Zero for the GameCube.

Here is the press release:

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Fireworks Entertainment and Goodman Rosen Prods. have optioned the television and movie rights to the best selling Nintendo video game “Perfect Dark.” _ The duo behind the syndicated television action hours “Relic Hunter,” “Andromeda,” “Highlander” and “The Lost World” could bow their live action “Perfect Dark” series as early as fall 2002.

A feature film, based on the sci-fi game that follows an action heroine named Joanna Dark, is also being planned.

U.S. consumers have spent more than $55 million on more than 1 million units of “Perfect Dark,” according to NPD TRSTS Video Games Service.

For Nintendo, better known for its G-rated games and characters such as “Super Mario Brothers” and “Pokemon,” the “Perfect Dark” title marked its first attempt to reach an older demographic. Due to its violent content, the game was rated Mature by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, limiting sales to consumers 17 and older. Fireworks and Goodman Rosen optioned the rights from Rare, which developed the game, and 4 Kids Entertainment (behind the “Pokemon” TV series and movies), which represents Nintendo and Rare for global merchandise licensing and domestic TV movie distribution and production.

Fireworks and Goodman Rosen, which have brought scribe-producer Peter Lenkov (“Demolition Man,” TV’s “La Femme Nikita”) aboard, will begin heavily shopping the property around this month, following the release of Paramount’s movie version of video game “Tomb Raider.” Similar to that vidgame-based project, “Perfect Dark” features a sexy young female who works as a secret agent for an industrial conglomerate known as the Carrington Institute.

Set in 2023, vidgame begins as an investigation of rival DataDyne Corp. and then unravels into an alien plot to invade Earth.

Rare is currently developing a “Perfect Dark” sequel, slated for a fall 2002 release on the Gamecube console.

GameBoy Advance launches in North America

Posted by Jed

As of Today, people in the United States can enjoy Gameboy Advance. However, there will be some waiting for people that preordered or if a store sells all the units they have. GBA could be in all of North America today, however, it’s unknown if it’s in Canada yet. Along with the GBA, 17 titles are launching today with it like Mario Advance and F-Zero Maximum Velocity. Notice that the ammount of games on the launch list(17) is the same ammount as the ammount of games on the Gamecube launch list…coincidence?

“Game Boy Advance sets a new standard in portable entertainment. In fact, we expect it to expand on our dominance in this category with sales of up to one million units in the first three weeks,” said Peter Main, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Nintendo of America.

Nintendo is expecting to ship 23 million units by March 31st, 2002. The GBA is $99.95 USD.

Nintendo Responds to Emulation

Posted by Jed

Nintendo said this about GBA emulation:

“Game Boy Advance has been so widely anticipated that it is not surprising that these emulators and pirate games have already made their way on to the web. However, these downloadable games are illegal and, in the long run, are not good for the gamer or the games industry.

“These copies are imitations and since they can only be played on a PC do not bring the uniqueness that GBA as a handheld console brings to the gameplay, which is the ability to enjoy console quality gaming anywhere.”

GameQubed does not promote emulation. It is illegal just like the above states. The games may be free, however, Viruses could come with the emulators and ROMS. This is also destroying the video game industry. Let’s use this as an example:

Without Emulation

1.5 million people buy a GBA game valued at $39.95 USD. The ammount of money made is: 59.92 million dollars.

With Emulation

However, let’s say only 1 million people would buy the game and another million would download it. The company would make is 39.95 million dollars.

Do you see the difference in money here? As sales decline, profits decline and this will lead to companies going bankrupt and less games are made and then the gaming industry could probably die.

2 more Titles for Gamecube

Posted by Jed

On Nintendo’s official release list, two new titles were added to the GameCube list. These two titles are 1080 Snowboarding 2 and Bomberman.

1080 Snowboarding 2 was originally planned as a Nintendo 64 titles, however, it was canned and made for GameCube. Probably because the developpers could have a lot more options when working on the game if it goes to GameCube.

Specs for GCN Changed

Posted by Jed

According to a press release from Nintendo, GameCube’s processor will be a little faster than it was presumed. It will be upgraded from 405 MHZ to a faster speed of 485 MHZ(which is faster than my own computer’s processor). Processors are the chips that process everything. The greater the speed, the better it is at running your programs or whatever. However, the MPU Flipper will be lowered from 202.5 MHZ to 162 MHZ due to the increased speed of the processor speed. The DSP is assumed to be 81 MHZ.

As a result, the bus speed will increase from 162 MHZ to 202.5 MHZ. The embedded 1-T RAM from NEC will have a capacity of 3MB, at 10.4GB/sec, and the outer 16MB 1-T SRAM will run at 81MHz, at 2.6GB/sec.

Although Microsoft’s XBOX’s processor is a lot faster than GameCube’s, it won’t really matter when the speeds are this high(that’s my opinion). Just in case you wanted more information on processors, have you ever seen those Pentium 4 commercials? well a Pentium 4 is a processor, and it’s one of the fastest ones available today. The fastest Pentium 4 is around 1.7 GHZ equal to 1700 MHZ.

NES Increasing in Demand

Posted by Jed Cross

Nintendo is really busy with it’s upcoming gaming console “GameCube”. However, in Japan, people are demanding the “Famicom” which means “family computer”. This is what the original “Nes” was called in Japan. The “NES” is the abbreviation for Nintendo entertainement system. Anywho, according to a survey of Japanese gaming retailers, the Famicom is in great demand and popularity. In one Kagoshima-based retailer, the older Famicom games are more popular and in demand than the new PS2 games. Some older, more rare Famicom games can be as much as 20 000 Yen($165USD) aprox.

Today, Nintendo has given in to the Famicom demand. They have started production of about 50 000 new Famicom units which will be sold all across Japan in the most popular gaming chains.
