Gamequbed Archives (July 2001)

Our affiliate VGNation has a funny little article on their website about Bill Gates. It’s located Here. Apparently, he didn’t know that Nintendo of America’s headquarters was down the street from Microsoft.

Our affiliate TendoGamers is reporting that SegaNet will merge with the ISP Earthlink. All existing SegaNet customers will be transfered over to Earthlink and still pay the $19.95 USD monthly plan. This is sort of a benefit, as Earthlink subscribers pay $21.95 USD per month. So instead of paying SegaNet for an internet service, Earthlink will be getting the check.

This comes as a surprise to me, as I was expecting SegaNet to be the online company for Nintendo GameCube games, but I think it will still be, as only the subscribers are being transfered, so games can still be hosted on SegaNet.

Nintendo’s 2nd party Retro Studios has officially cancelled “Raven Blade” for GameCube. The game was shown at E3 in video form.

The main reason for this was that Retro laid off all the artists and designers that were working on Raven Blade, plus some management, programmers and support staff. The rest of the programmers that were programming this game will head over to the “Metroid” project.

No word yet on whether [president] Jeff Spangenberg is still with the company. There’s speculation that he may be bought out by Nintendo or may still be there," said an anonymous source.

Nintendo said this: “Retro, along with Nintendo, has decided its most effective approach as a videogame developer is to focus on Metroid and give it the attention the franchise deserves. To do that, they refined staffing and are laying off 26 people, mainly the team that worked on Raven Blade. Raven Blade is now cancelled. It was a business decision and clearly based on the need to focus on Metroid and ensure it’s a great game, and also on the resources that would have been needed to finish Raven Blade.”

Peter Main, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing will retire before February 1, 2002. His succesor will be Nintendo of Canada’s current President, Peter MacDougall.

“Sometimes the term ‘industry legend’ is overused,” states Arakawa. “But in the case of Peter Main, it is perfectly appropriate. Many common industry practices were literally invented by Peter over the last 15 years, and we would not have achieved our phenomenal success without him.”

Main will be retiring from about 15 years at Nintendo. He started working at Nintendo in 1987.

According to several Nintendo websites, Nintendo will be hosting a Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament for the public during Spaceworld 2001 in Japan. Since Spaceworld is so close to the GameCube’s launch in Japan, the game will probably be the completed version. The tournament is being held to promote the GameCube and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

The prize of the tournament is not known. There may be no prizes at all, or perhaps the winner will walk away with a GameCube and SSBM? Time will tell…

Nintendo has 10 simple questions on their website. They ask you your age, what country you live in and about your internet experiences. The survey is located here http://www.nintendo.com/survey.jsp And remember, this survey will probably affect how GameCube works online…

It appears that Nintendo doesn’t like the direction that Retro Studios is taking with Metroid. This was fueled by several testers who complained about the lackluster of Metriod. Whatever Retro Studios plans to do, they have to get it ready in time for TGS (Tokyo Game Show), or else we’ll have a crisis on our hands.

Tendobox has discovered that IGN has updated their GameCube FAQ. In their FAQ, there’s some interesting news about Capcom in it. Now most of us know Resident Evil 0 and 5 other high profile titles that the company has not announced yet.

Capcom is really big with their Street Fighter series. Perhaps Street Fighter 4(that’ll be the day, let’s deal with Street Fighter 3:“some title” instead**) and Mega Man will come along into the Cube. Hopefully more information will be revealed before Spaceworld.

**For those of you that don’t know, Capcom have made tons of different “Street Fighter 2” games, from Street Fighter 2 to Street Fighter 2:champion edition. To add to this library, Super Street Fighter 2 was released, then Super Street Fighter 2:turbo. To add to the delay of Street fighter 3, Street Fighter Alpha was released followed by a 2nd alpha game. I’m not sure if Street Fighter alpha 3 came out before Street Fighter 3.

I recently added previews for Super Monkey Ball, Eternal Darkness, Donkey Kong Racing, and Madden NFL 2002. I also updated the Metriod Prime preview. I can’t do any GBA reviews until I somehow snag a GBA; and that could be, well, whenever I get money.

Be sure to head over to the forums, where we already have 16 members and 300 posts!

When Marionette was revealed on game lists at E3, people asked Perrin Kaplan about the title, and he simply replied “Think about that one”.

Tendobox did a quick domain search and found that Mario-Net.net is registered to Marionette Inc. So could Mario-Net be Nintendo’s online gaming network? It could be an online game too. More information will probably be revealed at Spaceworld.

According to SimcityHQ, Simcity 4000 is already under development. Simcity is basically a PC game, but it does get ported to consoles. Like for instance, Simcity classic(called Simcity at the time) was first released for PC. It later got ported over to the Super Nes in 1991. In 1994, Simcity 2000 was released for the PC. Again, it was ported over to the Super Nes(it didn’t play very good on the Super Nes either), The Sony Playstation and the Sega Saturn. In 1999, Maxis finally released the anticipated Simcity 3000…but with no port over to a console. Now with Simcity 4000 under development, and with Simcity 64 canned for released in North America, there could be a chance that Simcity 4000 will be released on the GameCube, not a big chance though. click here for more about the game

GameSpot is reporting that FFXI(Final Fantasy 11) will be indeed be released on multiple consoles. The game was originally only in development for PS2 and the PC. However, it is not known which platforms it will be released on, it’s likely that the XBOX will be one of them and a chance that the GameCube will get it too.

After having viewed the poll results from the past 2 or three months, it’s quite obvious that I have to get rid of that crappy ad in the banner. People have to realize though that the host requires that I place it at the very top of the page. I am also considering getting pay hosting; then there wouldn’t have to be any banner at all.

But instead of doing all that work switching servers, I’ll get my head together and see if I can make something that can please most of you. And as always, suggestions are always welcome.

I would have thought that the XBox was far away on the horizon, and that it wouldn’t launch until 2002! Boy, was I wrong.

During a closed doors conference at E3, Microsoft announced that they would retail their system at $299.99, and that the launch date would be November 8th. Ironically, Nintendo held their conference and announced a price of $199.99, but they said that the Cube would launch on November 5th! This is the first time in gaming history that two systems have launched side by side. We can only wait and see what the outcome will be.
