Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem Review

The developers of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain , Silicon Knights. Have given us another hit, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. Originally a title for the N64. This game has finally made its way to the GameCube. Silicon Knights and Nintendo used the 2 year development time to utilize the GameCube’s Graphic and fix controls. Gamers have been waiting for this game for a while. Its finally here!

Was this game worth the wait? Bottom line this game is awesome and is the GameCube’s number one thriller bar none. The story in the game is enticing and well thought out, and grabs you by the ankle and won’t let go. The visual presentation is astounding. These are some of the best graphics on the Gamecube. The control scheme is light years ahead of Resident Evil’s stiff robotic like movements. Take notes Capcom.

The best gameplay element is the “insanity effects” which is a refreshing idea.

Do not compare this title to Resident Evil this game is a different animal all together. This game is way ahead of any game in it’s genre.

Gameplay

Eternal Darkness is in no means a short game. This game takes at least 25 hours to beat. This is a game for the hardcore, yet it will appeal to the casual gamer. More dedicated gamers will enjoy this games plot twists, scares and surprises. Players take control over a dozen characters. Characters vary from a Roman Soldier to Alexendra Roivas a present day student, at a Washington university. Each character serves a point in the plot. The story of the game stretches over 20 centuries.

Players will find the combat system refreshing. The star of the combat system is the Magicks. Magicks works like Rock, paper, and Scissors. Here is how it works, red spells beat green spells, green spells beat blue spells, and blue spells beat red spells.

Magick can also be used to enchant weapons and is an integral part of the game. Players also get to use a large arsenal of weapons spanning the lengths of history. Puzzle range from easy to difficult, however none are that hard that gamers will quit.

Graphics

The graphics in the game are top notch. Eternal Darkness also supports Progressive scan and 16 x 9 widescreen mode. The frame rate never falters below 60 fps even when the screen is full of baddies. The textures in the game are some of the best seen on any home console. Character models are good, but falter a little in close-ups. The 3D camera is fine, with very few flaws and keeps up with action well.

Audio

Eternal Darkness delivers an audio treat to the ears. The game runs in Dolby Pro Logic II, for Gamers with receivers that support it. The sound quality through my set up was crisp and clear. The games moody soundtrack fits the game well.

Overall, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem is a thrilling experience, that shouldn’t be missed by GameCube owners. This is a must have title for any gamers collection casual or hardcore alike. Go get it now!
