Final Fight One Review

Over the years we have seen many 2D fighters such as: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Ninja Turtles and my favorite, Final Fight. It was twelve years ago since it came out on the SNES, long before I can remember. But now it’s back to start the new millennium on the Game Boy Advance.

Capcom did a good job bringing it back from the dead. With a little extras such as multiplayer and battery save which this game has no point to without. The game wasn’t totally changed. It’s still the same side scrolling action walking back and forth. But the game looks much more detailed and feels right at home on the GBA.

Well how can we have a game without a story line? It would be boring to walk around and just kick people’s ass for no reason (a lot of you do that every day and might like that but still…) On your adventure you must save the mayor’s daughter Jessica who is kidnapped by the Mad Gear Gang. Now Cody, Guy, and Haggar must stop them. This story gives the game much more depth.

As the Mad Gear Gang attacks you must defend yourself. The game is based on a series of kicks, punches, and different combinations to knock your enemies down. You can throw them over, jump kick, do flips in the air, and there is even a special move that knocks down anyone in your way. But the special takes away some of your life. Your enemies come in all shapes and sizes. A lot look like clowns and weirdos. Some are shrimpy and some are 2 times bigger than you. There are over 6 bosses. All dedicated to making sure you don’t survive. It really is hard. Sometimes they distract you and hit you when you least expect it. The hits may take away half your life. It takes a lot of skill and practice.

Guy, Cody, and Haggar are very different from one another. This makes a difference in how well they perform. For example, Haggar might be the slowest, which makes him more vulnerable, but he has more power and life. Guy is the fastest but has less life and strength. Cody is in the middle. Some of their moves like the special ones are different too. The great feature that really makes this game interesting is the pickups. During the game you will come across some barrels. When you break them a pickup item comes out. It could be anything. Something like sushi can even give you life. There are things like radios and jewels that add up to your points. Some even contain bats, knives, swords, and many more that can be used in battle.

The graphics and sound are simple. This isn’t Golden Sun that just blows your mind away. It was improved since the SNES but not that much. Things are as fully detailed, as they should be in a 2D game. One thing that was well done is the background. Its really colorful and matches the place your in. When you are in a bar it shows people cheering and getting drunk. It also changes from day to night. While fighting the boss there are cut screens where you talk and it shows a little movie. As for the sound, it could have been better but will justify.

And last but not least, multiplayer. Remember how you would fight with your friend over who plays the SNES? Well those days are over. Now you can link up and kick ass together. You need two games but it’s really worth it. You can both play together at the same time.

If you enjoyed playing the old Fighters on the SNES then you will really enjoy this. It’s a game that takes you back twelve years and makes the old SNES classic come alive.
