Sonic Advance Review
I have always loved the old school side scrolling gameplay that is in Sonic Advance. When I heard it was coming to the GBA, I went out and bought it straight away. This game simply rocks - with 4 characters to choose from and many levels this game is a must have for anyone who owns a GBA. This game also one of the first games to feature the GBA/GCN connection, and is intended to interface with Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the Gamecube. The features don’t end there, as you can get some friends and play a four player game with either single-pak or multi-pak link.
This game has a lot of detail in the backgrounds and the characters, although it gets a little grainy at times. It has excellent colors and really uses the GBA’s power well. While using Tails you can see his tails flap in the wind as he runs, and it is very pleasing to the eyes that all characters have this wind animations. This game also includes all the classic sonic sounds. Everything from the rings to the excellent music in this game. If you are an old school Genesis fan, you can become quickly accustomed to improved sounds.
The classic side scrolling Sonic gameplay hasn’t lost its footing after ten years, and there are plenty of moves for your characters to execute. Depending on the character you use, you’ll have a whole slew of moves to figure out for each character. Each character has their own moves depending on how they are physically set. Tails can fly, Sonic can do a type of spike slash, Knuckles can glide, and Amy has a hammer.
You’ll probably play through the game as one character, before going back and playing it again with a different character. This game will keep you going for a long time especially since it has multiplayer options and a wide variety of secrets to unlock.
Sonic Advance is an excellent game, and now that he hasn’t lost his footing since moving onto Mario’s home ground. If you are a Sonic fan or a former Genesis player, then I recommend getting Sonic Advance for the GBA, as it will firmly recreate the experience that you felt while playing with the Blue Wonder on the GBA.
