SSX Tricky Review

Most gamers have heard of a snowboarding game called SSX Tricky, well GameCube owners rejoice. Now that EA has brought the game to all the current consoles you can be sure to own it.

This game has excellent graphics. The courses look great and the characters though some may not dress realistically, they do look really nice. While boarding you’ll notice that your board will leave tracks in the snow accordingly to how you are riding so if you turn or go straight the snow tracks will look differently.

The music in this game is a decent soundtrack and the sound effects are great. You can hear your board gliding across snow or scraping across the ice. The characters voices are great and help bring out some weird personality of each character. As you go down the slopes you’ll hear your character shout many phrases that will make you bust up laughing, the voices really fit the personalities.

You’ve probably heard that the PS2’s controller is the best controller for this game, which is probably right even though the GameCube’s controller is just fine. “A” will make your character jump, “B” is your boost/tweak. “X” is for your spin/flip tricks if you use it in conjunction with the Control Stick but this can also be done with the D-Pad and the D-Pad can be used to prewind your tricks. The C-stick will make your character punch/shove in the direction you push it and L, R, and Z are grab moves. This game’s control is near perfect but some tricks may require a few buttons on the face that may be hard to press together like B and X. The most annoying thing about the control is the Y button. “Y” is used to reset your character on the track if you somehow go lost out in the massive courses. This gets so annoying when I go to switch from B to X quickly and accidentally hit Y and it resets my trick.

This game has massive levels. You’ll find yourself playing one course then going through it again and taking another path. The levels are so huge that even I have playing them at least 30 times each am still yet to find everything about them. Not only will the levels have you coming back but there are so many modes and so much to be earned.

Buy this game you wont regret it. If you have both PS2 and GCN like me then make your choice because I think both versions are great. I bought the GameCube version despite the fact that the control may not be as good as the PS2’s copy.
