Super Smash Bros. Melee Review
Super Smash Bros. Melee is the follow up to the wildly successful Super Smash Brothers on the N64. This game has always been my favorite N64 title and I was expecting similiar on the GameCube, that’s not what I got. I got something that took the N64 version and made it look like a piece of garbage. Its true this game is that much better, bottom line.
The graphics on this game are much more improved over the original. The characters are very nicely detailed with a high polygon amount and perfect shading. The only part in this game that should have improved graphics is when you earn some of the stages of the N64 version which are identical to their counterparts. Even with that slight bit you bought this game for the new stuff and the old levels are still just as fun as they were back in the days of N64.
Trust me on this one, you’ll love the sound and especially the music of this game. I’m positive there will be people out there to buy this game just for its soundtrack. The sound effects of this game are really nice. The beam sword sounds real unlike in the N64 and you can hear stuff like Link’s Hook-Shot’s chain. Now the music in this game will strike similarily to retro gamers. You’ll recognize music from NES games and from many past games. From the NES music tracks such as Ice Climbers or Dr. Mario music you’ll hear music from every Nintendo system and it will sound very nicely improved and redone on the GameCube.
Many people may have called Super Smash Bros. a button masher. Well anyone who wants to say that obviously never played it. The control in this game is near exact to the original (Hey, if it isn’t broken don’t fix it), yet its got enough improvements to make it somewhat original. Now in addition to your old special moves you have Left/Right + B for more moves. That’s certainly not all in VS. mode the C stick can be used to do a smash attack rather then “tapping” the control stick in a direction and hitting “A.” Although this is added the “tapping” and pressing “A” is still going to be used. For example with Link if you “tap” the control stick and hit A and Hold A for a limited time while you hold A there Link will stand there holding his sword ready to swing when A is released doing this also increases the attacks power. This game has a great deal of new moves and new modes but its still just like Super Smash Bros; only better.
This is a game that wont tire. With the new adventure mode which is a gamers dream come true, to all the new modes you’ll be playing this game probably until Nintendo releases a 3rd Super Smash Bros. With the 25 total characters you’ll be playing a long time to earn the 11 secret characters and you’ll want to get all the levels. In addition to this there is secret modes and around 300 trophyies all telling of some past Nintendo history. With all that there’s even more, and one of the coolest things is the Name Entry. This allows you to enter your name and a bunch of buddies and it will keep track of how many times you’ve KO’d a specific buddy and will keep track of MUCH more you’ve done. With all that you’ll constantly be coming to this game and playing some multiplayer to pummel your friends.
There’s absolutely no way you can pass this game up. This game is sure to be one of your top 5 games and if you loved the original Smash Bros. you’ll love this one even more. Don’t hesitate any longer go out and buy this game.
