Super Smash Bros. Melee Review #2

Super Smash Bros. Melee is obviously the sequel to Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64. SSB was an incredible game, and still is. Any N64 owner should run out and buy this game. I own a Nintendo 64, but I don’t have this game yet… shame on me. Anyways, HAL and Nintendo have done a spectacular job on the gameplay as well as the game engine and the game itself. The ESRB gave the game a T (teen, 13+ years of age) probably because of the fighting that’s involved in the game. The N64 version received an E because it was cartoon characters, but I guess they have gotten stricter.

Although the graphics are very nice, they aren’t perfect. I see better graphics on other games and they could have been a little nicer in Super Smash Bros. Melee. But why do you really need graphics in this game? It’s a tough question to answer because of the genre. Anyways, in the N64 version, all the characters were 3-D while the backgrounds were all purely 2-D. This has been entirely redone and the graphics are all now 3-D. The backgrounds are spectacular. All the characters have more polygons as well making them more lifelike. There are some levels, such as the Mushroom Kingdom, which will remind you of levels in games. The Mushroom Kingdom on top of the castle will remind you of Super Mario 64. It has Peach’s picture as well as that magnificent waterfall.

Excellent sound in this game, just… excellent. Music from Nintendo’s best games makes up an incredible music library in the game. All the tunes are here (most of them anyways) and they sound better than ever. All the hits and smashes in the game sound pretty crazy. “Ahahahaha” yells Mario when he falls off the arena, which makes for some good laughs.

You will not easily tire of this game. This game will keep you playing and playing. That is of course if you have someone to play with. It’s simple; the game was designed for multiplayer and not single player. It’s not that fun playing all alone. When you’re playing with friends, you will start to feel adrenaline rushing near the end of the battle. With many different characters to choose from, you will have to learn a lot if you want to master the game. Single player does provide fun, but just not as much. Anyways, when you’re playing with a friend, and as each character is almost equally rounded off in speed, power and stamina, the battle is almost equal all the time. You just have to make use of your characters special ability.

Nothing is really new in the game, although there is an adventure mode in the 1 player mode which will probably provide you with extra hours of fun. Since the game is a sequel, and it just is an improvement over the 1st game, then it’s kind of hard to talk about originality. There are also new special attacks in the game as well. Rent or buy? I’d go with buy.
